Bishop Trevor with Rowan Williams
KENT NEWS: The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams has officially welcomed his new right-hand man to the parishes of Kent.

Bishop Trevor Willmott formally takes on the role of Bishop of Dover and Bishop in Canterbury at an installation ceremony this weekend.

The 59-year-old, who has moved to the city of Canterbury from Hampshire with his wife Margaret, will now spend his time carrying out the Archbishop’s duties while Dr Williams is away on national and international business.

Despite the daunting task ahead of him, Bishop Trevor said he is excited and ready to start the role, which was previously held by the Right Reverend Dr Stephen Venner.

“I have no worries about taking this on – I’m really looking forward to meeting people and finding out what they’re about,” he said.

“I’m here to care for the community foremost and bring the good news of Jesus to people.”

He stressed he will also be focusing his attention on those who steer clear of religion.

“The local church should be a place of warmth and welcome even for those who may not be religious,” he said. “I will try and show them what it means to us. They might start to ask some questions.”

The avid cricket fan, who has become a Kent supporter since his recent move to the county, admitted the Church was not his first choice of vocation.

“I thought I was going to be a lawyer. Then when I was 20 or 21 I suffered a major road accident which led me to question a lot of things in my life,” he said.

“Out of that grew an awareness that ordination and ministry might be the right way forward for me.”

Bishop Trevor said his two passions are rural life and helping people who are living on the fringes of society.

“I’ve got a lot of commitment for rural life and experience in working with rural communities,” he said.

“But I also work closely with people on the edges of society, like homeless people or those in prison.

“I have worked in prisons all my life and have used my energy to try and help – we are all children of God regardless of our circumstances.”

Asked how he will be different to his predecessors, Bishop Trevor said: “I think we all try to build on the person that was there before us.

“But I believe the handover is from the community – the real lessons come from the people who live here.”

He said he has been looking forward to taking over from Dr Venner, who has become the Anglican Bishop for the Armed Forces.

Dr Venner was at the centre of controversy in December when he made comments about how the Taliban could be admired for their commitment to their faith. He later apologised.

Bishop Trevor said: “I think his comments regarding the Taliban were misunderstood.”
Bishop Trevor now starts his work on behalf of the Archbishop and diocese of Canterbury, which stretches from Maidstone to the east coast.
